Health Canada is advising Canadians of a voluntary recall of some lots of various Sage brand single-use, pre-moistened disposable cloths ( list of Recalled products ) used for cleansing or protecting skin, due to possible contamination with the bacteria Burkholderia cepacia (B.cepacia) . The affected cloths are used mainly in healthcare settings such as hospitals, but are also sold nationwide at retail pharmacies and medical supply stores. The affected products were distributed between August 2014 and August 2016. This bacterium poses little medical risk to healthy people. However, hospitalized patients and people with certain health problems, such as a weakened immune system or chronic lung disease (particularly cystic fibrosis), may be more susceptible to infections with B. cepacia . Adverse effects can range from non-serious events, such as a rash or other skin irritations, to potentially serious and even life-threatening infections of the blood stream or respiratory system. Consumers should check to see if they have purchased any of the affected cloths as the products should not be used. If consumers have used the products and have concerns about their health, they should consult a healthcare practitioner. The Canadian recall is part of a worldwide voluntary recall by the company Sage Products and is being conducted as a precaution by the Canadian distributor, Cardinal Health Canada Inc. According to the distributor, no products sold in Canada have been confirmed to be contaminated. Health Canada is monitoring the recall and will inform Canadians if new safety information arises.
