If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor. Check to see if you have recalled product in your home or establishment. Recalled product should be thrown out or returned to the location where it was purchased. Domoic acid is a marine biotoxin which can accumulate in shellfish such as bivalves (soft shell, quahog, surf, razor and propeller, mussels, whole scallops and oysters). Domoic acid can cause amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) if consumed. The symptoms of ASP vary from nausea, vomiting and diarrhea to muscle weakness, disorientation and memory loss. They usually occur one-half to six hours after consumption. In extreme cases, death can occur.
