Testing by Creative Education of Canada Inc has determined that the recalled jewellery contains cadmium in excess of allowable limits. Under the Children's Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age and contain more than 130 mg/kg total cadmium if the jewellery item is small enough to be totally enclosed in the small parts cylinder when a force of not more than 4.45 N is applied. Cadmium is highly toxic, especially to children. A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to cadmium, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, as well as effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system.
