Expanded recall: Frigidaire© and Kenmore Elite© Freestanding Electric Ranges recalled due to fire and burn hazards

Issued May 16, 2024
Issue
Depending on the model, the surface heating elements can turn on spontaneously without being switched on, fail to turn off after being switched off and/or heat to different temperatures than those selected by unit controls. These situations pose fire and burn hazards to the users. In Canada, since the original recall was announced in 2009, the company has received at least two reports in which affected ranges are alleged to have turned on without the corresponding controls being turned to the “on” position. No injuries were reported. In the United States, since the original recall was announced, Electrolux has received at least 212 reports of the ranges behaving erratically, including 14 reports of fires and eight reports of injuries involving burns to hands or arms, as well as smoke inhalation.

What to do
Consumers should immediately contact Electrolux to, depending on the model, either obtain a free inspection and repair where possible, or an electronic gift card. Consumers whose ranges are not exhibiting any of the conditions this recall addresses (turning on spontaneously without being switched on, failing to turn off after being switched off and/or heating to different temperatures than selected) may continue to use their range while awaiting repair and/or new range should they choose to purchase one. If their range is unrepairable, consumers will receive a $50 electronic gift card and reimbursement of up to $60 for the haul-away fee for their old range once they have submitted proof of purchase of a new range and the haul-away fee paid. Electrolux may, at its discretion, reimburse haul-away fees over $60 when consumers provide receipts or other documentation showing paid haul away fees. As discussed in the Use and Care Guide, consumers should always refrain from leaving items on the cooking surface of their ranges when unattended and/or not in use. For more information, consumers can contact Electrolux toll-free by telephone at 888-845-9104, between 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, by e-mail at potentiometerrecall@electrolux.com , or visit the company website .
