Health Canada warns that certain children’s jewellery available on Amazon.ca contain lead in excess of allowable limits

Health Canada’s sampling and evaluation program has determined that the jewellery contains lead in excess of allowable limits. Under the Children's Jewellery Regulations of the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act , it is illegal to import, advertise or sell jewellery items that appeal primarily to children under 15 years of age and contain more than 90 mg/kg total lead. Lead and cadmium are highly toxic, especially to children. A range of serious health effects have been associated with exposure to lead and cadmium, including anemia, vomiting, diarrhea, serious brain injury, convulsions, coma, as well as effects related to the liver, kidneys, heart and immune system. In extreme cases, there have been deaths. What to do
Consumers who have these affected products should immediately take the jewellery away from children and dispose of them according to municipal hazardous waste guidelines. Regularly check the Healthy Canadians Recalls and Safety Alerts database for dangerous products and take action to remove items of concern. Health Canada would like to remind consumers to report any health or safety incidents related to the use of these products or any other consumer product or cosmetic by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form .
