2001–2005 Kawasaki Kvf400 Recall

Issued June 30, 2005
Issue
Hazard description
On certain ATV's, if the front wheel impacts a significant obstruction, such as rock or log, while the steering is fully turned to either side, the resulting loading of the ball joint can result in elongation or enlargement of the hole in the knuckle into which the ball joint is mounted. Over time, and with substantial additional use, this impact-triggered enlargement of the hole allows the ball joint and knuckle interface to wear, resulting in a looseness and possible clunking noise during vehicle operation. If allowed to continue, this looseness can eventually lead to separation of the ball joint from the knuckle, creating the potential for an accident resulting in injury or death. Correction: For KVF300 and 400 series, the aluminium knuckles and other related components are to be replaced with steel parts. For KVF360, 650 and 700 series, the aluminium knuckle, ball joint and suspension arm will be replaced with updated versions.
