1995–2003 Pierce Dash Recall

Issued July 26, 2011
Issue
Hazard description
On certain fire trucks exposed to winter road salt and road de-icing chemicals, the fuel tank straps may corrode and fail. This could allow the fuel tank to contact the ground, which may compromise the tanks integrity and permit fuel leakage. Diesel fuel spilt on the roadway could endanger road users by making the roadway unexpectedly slippery. If the fuel tank separates from the vehicle, it would cause the engine to stall, resulting in a loss of vehicle propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash. Also, a fuel tank assembly separating from the vehicle could strike another vehicle, stationary object, or bystander, causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect the fuel tank straps. If the straps are significantly corroded they will be replaced free of charge on vehicles less than ten (10) years of age. For vehicles older than ten (10) years, the vehicle owner may purchase replacement straps through Pierce Customer Service.
